Big Idea 4: 1, 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 17

1. Altruistic behavior is behavior that favors other members of a species over oneself. Me pouring my brother a cup of water is an example of altruistic behavior.

3. Biomes are large areas of similar plant and animal groups that have adapted to its specific environment. I found four biomes: grassland, forest, desert, and aquatic.

4. A climax community is a community in which the populations of all its species remain relatively stable and keep eachother in balance. The forest in my backyard is an example of a climax community; it has reached the final stage of succession of communities.

5. Commensalism is a symbiotic relationship between two species in which one benefits and one is not affected at all. This bird nest is an example of commensalism. The birds receive shelter while the tree does not gain or lose anything in return.

11. A K-strategist is an animal that reproduces few young but spends lots of time and energy raising them. This jaguar is an example of a k-strategist.

12. Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship between two species in which both benefit. The relationship  between humming birds and the flowers it pollinates, an example of one is pictured, is an example of mutualism. The flower gets its pollen moved around and fertilized, and the bird gets nourishment from the flower's nectar.

17. A population is the amount of organisms of a species living in an environment. In my friend's backyard, there is a population of 4 redwood trees.
