Big Idea 1

Adaptation of a Plant: This plant has slowly grown over the concrete street that had covered it previously. The plant has made an adjustment to a changing environment.
Amniotic Egg: Chicken eggs contain an embryo, which helps nurture the growing offspring.
Angiosperm: An angiosperm is any plant that produces flowers. This is a picture of an angiosperm over the grave of a deceased human being.
Annelid: An annelid is a worm-like creature. An example, shown here, is an earthworm. Another is a leach.
Arachnid: Arachnid is the scientific name for spider. This is an example of a spider found in my garage.
Bilateral Symmetry: An object/organism is bilaterally symmetrical if it, when split in half, has halves that are mirror images of each other. A human body is perfectly symmetrical.
Bryophytes: A bryophyte is any nonvascular plant. An example of this is moss, which does not contain vascular tissue.
Cnidarian: A cnidarian is any animal related to the hydra, jellyfish, or sea anemone. This is an example of a sea anemone.
Fungi: Fungi are eukaryotic organisms such as yeast and mold. Another example is mushrooms, shown here.
Gastropod: Gastropods are snail-like organisms. Pictured here are sand snails found at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.
Genetic Variation: A genetic variation is an organism with a altered gene that thus leads to a different phenotype. Pictured here are mini peppers, which have been modified to be smaller.
Gnathostome: A dog is an example of a gnathostome, which is any organism with a mouth and jaws.
Gymnosperm Cone: A gymnosperm produces cones, which carry spores. An example of a cone is shown above.
Lichens: A lichen is similar to moss in the sense that it is dark green and covers other plants, but it is a fungus and exhibit a symbiotic relationship with its host, as shown.
Modified Root of a Plant: A modified root is a root of a plant that is adapted for storage of food in the form of carbohydrates. It adapts itself for storage. Carrots are an example of a modified root, as they contain all of their nutrients in their roots.
Protostome: Protostome is the scientific name for mollusk. It means the mouth appears before the anus. Some mollusks include clams, as shown above.
Seedless Vascular Plant: A seedless vascular plant is any plant with a vascular transporting system with roots, such as this fern plant.
Tetrapod: A tetrapod is any vertebrate land animal. A cat is a basic example of a tetrapod. It possesses a spine and four legs.
Radial Symmetry: An organism is radially symmetrical if it contains protruding parts that originate from the same axis. The center of the starfish is the central axis, and the five limbs originate from the axis.
Distinguishing Characteristics between Monocots and Dicots: Dicots characteristically have secondary growth, which is a protruding part of the plant that grows from the original. This is an example of a tree that grew three different structures from the original.
