Logs 31-40

 Big Idea 2: Number 15
Enzyme
This bottle of laundry prewash is a perfect example of enzymes.  Enzymes are proteins that participate in basically every chemical reaction in the human body.  Enzymes can enhance the rate of reaction between biomolecules.  This prewash uses enzymes to speed up the chemical reaction involved in cleaning clothes.
Big Idea 2: Number 17
Glycogen
Glycogen is a form of energy storage in animals and fungi.  It is a short term energy storage molecule referred to as "animal starch".  This Builder's bar is an example of glycogen because it is a protein bar that is used to help develop muscle tissue, and muscles are storage areas for glycogen.
  Big Idea 2: Number 18
Glycolysis
Every animal has to metabolize food if it wants to survive.  The first part of the metabolization process in animals is glycolysis.  Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose into pyruvate. This bucket of sugar is a good example of glycolysis because in order to give energy to the animal that ingests sugar, it must first be broken down by glycolysis..
 Big Idea 2: Number 24
Hydrophobic
This photo of olive oil is a good example of a hydrophobic substance.  A substance is hydrophobic if it is repelled from water.  Since water is very polar, hydrophobic substances are usually nonpolar.  Oil is made up of lipids, which are nonpolar; This makes it hydrophobic.
 Big Idea 2: Number 23
Hydrophilic
This photo of table salt is a good example of a hydrophilic substance.  A substance is hydrophilic if it is attracted to, or dissolves in water.  Hydrophilic substances are usually polar, like water.  Table salt disolves in water and is polar, so it is hydrophilic.

 Big Idea 2: Number 19
Heterotroph
This photo of a butterfly is a example of an heterotroph.  A heterotroph is any organism that does not perform carbon fixation.  This includes all animals, including humans (ie. a butterfly).

 Big Idea 1: Number 8
Arachnid
This photo of a spider web in the  front yard of my house is a creation of a spider, or arachnid as it is called scientifically.  Arachnids are eight legged invertebrate animals.  Spider is another name for an arachnid.  This web was formed by the highly poisonous species of spider known as the Black Widow.
 Big Idea 3: Number 17
Phenotype
This photo of a chick and its bright yellow fur is an example of a phenotype.  A phenotype is a trait that is observable.   Hair color is one of the less complicated  forms of a phenotype.  Skin color, however, is much more complicated because it involves several different genes, even more alleles, and environmental factors.
Big Idea 2: Number 14
Entropy
This photo of my desk is, unfortunately, a good example of entropy.  Entropy is classified as lack of order and predictability, but in regards to thermodynamics, it can mean the unavailability of a system's thermal energy to be converted into mechanical work.  Both definitions have a similar negative connotation.  My desk is definitely lacking order, and as a result, it reduces the amount of work I can do.  Makes sense right?

Big Idea 3: Number 3
Eukaryote
This photo of a bush is a perfect example of a eukaryote.  It, along with all animals and plants for that matter, is an example of a eukaryote.  Eukaryotic cells include a nucleus and a nuclear membrane.  This sets eukaryotes apart from the nucleus-less prokaryotes.
