Big Idea 4

2.This can of tuna is an example of  a biological magnification. A biological magnification is when toxins become more concentrated higher up in the trophic levels.  This can of tuna represents the accumulation of  mercury that the tuna get from the water.As a result, the organismic higher up in the trophic levels consume the mercury in the tuna causing numerous amounts of illnesses.
4. These bushes is an example of a climax community. A climax community is community where organisms are able to live in harmony with each other. These bushes are living in harmony together because they are not harming each other.

6. These tree roots give an example of competition. Competition is a process where organisms compete for a certain resource. In this case, the roots of the trees are competing to get water from the river.

7. These decomposing leaves is an example of a detrivore. A detrivore is a type of orgainsm that get their energy from nonliving organisms. These leaves are decomposing because they are being consumed by detrivores.


8. This piece of bread gives an example of endosperm. Endosperm is a type of tissue found in a plant seed that are rich in starch. It is this endosperm of flour that is ground up to make this piece of bread.

9. This palm tree is an example of an introduced species. An introduced species is a species that was taken away from their native locations and moved to other regions. This palm tree is and introduced species because it originally came from the tropics and is not introduced into the non-tropic climate of Sacramento.


13. The moss growing on the side of this ledge is an example of a niche. A niche is the role of an organism in their habitat. The role of the moss in relation to the ledge is that it provides moisture for the plants that are living above the ledge by keeping the soil wet.

15. The lichen in the tree is an example of parasitism. Parasitism is when an organism uses another organism to obtain nourishment in which the other organism is harmed in the process. This lichen is considered a parasite because it is using the trees height to obtain sunlight. As a result, the lichen covers the leaves of the trees to receive sunlight.

17. The group of trees in this picture is an example of a population. Population is a certain group of plants, animals, or people living in a general area. In this case, the population of this area consist of these trees.
19. The weeds in this picture are an example of an r-strategist. An r-strategist is a type of species that produce a lot of offspring , but only a few offspring survive. These weeds are capable of producing many offspring at one time, but only a few of the offspring survive.
