Big Idea 4 #1-10

1. Big Idea 4: Biomes
Biomes are the geographical traits and climate of a specific region. The region shown is a temperate forest, which is shown by the amount of trees in the area, the amount of light in the area, and the soil, which, as shown, allows much grass and scrub to grow. This picture relates to big idea four by showing that biological systems result from interplay between many organisms.

2. Big Idea 4: Biomes
Biomes are the climate and geographical definition of an area, whether it be on land, or water. The picture shows a river biome, which consists of water flowing in a direction, high oxygen content, and diverse species. This picture relates to big idea four by showing how interplay between many environmental factors influence the classification of a region.

3. Big Idea 4: Competition
Competition is the result of organisms competing over a limited resource, for animals it is mostly food and shelter, while for plants it is mainly light and water.  This picture shows two trees competing over water, which is shown by their overlapping roots, especially since they are in such close proximity. The picture relates to big idea four by showing that "biological systems interact" such as is shown by these competing trees.

4. Big Idea 4: Introduced Species
An introduced species is a species that humanity has introduced to a specific area that they are not native to. The picture shows a palm tree, which is not native to this area, but was introduced by humans who wished to grow palm trees. This picture relates to big idea four by showing that humans can have a great effect on the complex nature of things if they so wish.

5. Big Idea 4: Detrivore
Detrivores are organisms that break down dead plant or animal matter and return nutrients to the ecosystem. The picture shown depicts termites breaking down a fallen tree and returning its wasted nutrients back to the earth. The picture relates to big idea four by showing that animals and organisms play an important role in the renewal of new life.

6. Big Idea 4: Niche
A niche is the part of the biome that a specific organism inhabits. The picture shown depicts the certain niche of a lichen, which prefers this area due to its closeness to water. The picture relates to big idea four by showing that organisms can only move into a specific area if there is no species already there.

7. Big Idea 4: Parasitism
A parasite is an organism that derives its energy by stealing it from the host organism. The picture shown depicts mistletoe, which is taking energy from the host by attaching to it. The picture relates to big idea four by showing that biological systems interact in complex ways.

8. Big Idea 4: Producer
A producer is an organism that does not consume any other organism, but only survives on sunlight, water, and oxygen. The picture shown is a lichen, which is an example of a producer. The picture relates to big picture four by showing that other animals could not exist without a producer.

9. Big Idea 4: Primary Consumer
A primary consumer is an animal that eats the producer, they are herbivores. The picture shows a wood duck, which feeds on lichen. This picture relates to big picture four by showing that a producer provides life for many other species of animals, while so does the primary consumer.

10. Big Idea 4: Secondary Consumer
A secondary consumer is an animal that eats the primary consumer; they are carnivores and receive roughly ten percent of the energy that the primary consumer had. This picture shows a dog, which in many cases, eats a duck. This relates to big picture four by showing that all animals, whether they be closely linked or not, provide some source of energy for all other trophic levels
