Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes

Diploid -  An organism with two sets of chromosomes, one from the mother and the other from the father. Therefore, these giraffes are diploid.

Ethylene - Ethylene is an organic compound, a hydrocarbon.  It comes in the form of a colorless, flammable gas.  It is used by farmers sometimes to "force-ripen" fruits. Apples are a very common fruit that ethylene is used on.

Eukaryote - Eukaryotes are organisms with complex cells that are enclosed with membranes.  In this picture I show a python which is an eukaryote.

Gamete - Gametes are the sex reproductive cells in organisms.  The two different gametes are the ovum(female and sperm(male.)  This gecko has gametes, either sperm cells or an egg(ovum.)

Evidence of different alleles - These three coy fish show different alleles due to their pigmentation.  Different alleles can be different phenotypic traits that you can observe.  One fish is completely orange, another is orange and white, and the third is a red orange.

Flock, herd, and schooling - These are all different forms of organisms being in groups.  A schooling is associated with a large group of fish, and a herd is associated with a group of mammals, and a flock is a group of birds.  In this picture there is an example of a flock of flamingos, a type of bird.

GMO - GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism.  It is for an organism who has been under genetic engineering to change their genetic material.  Genetically Modified Food come from GMO's.  Pop tarts are genetically modified and although they say it is baked with "real fruit", the fruit is still genetically modified..

Batesian Mimicry - This type of mimicry is when a weaker organism acts as a predator or poisonous organism.  In this example this harmless green tree frog resembles a red-eyed poisonous tree frog.

Behavior - Behavior is the range of actions made by organisms due to the environment. When this bird feels its environment is dirty or it feels dirty it is stimulated to clean itself.  So this bird pecks at himself to make sure it is clean.

Phenotype - A phenotype is an observable trait of an organism.  A phenotype of this python is its green skin.
