Big Idea 1

4) amniotic egg: This egg is amniotic because it was layed by a four legged animal with a backbone, a chicken.

6) angiosperm: This rose bush is an angiosperm because it is a plant that produces flowers and has enclosed seeds.

7) annelid: An annelid is a segmented worm. So this earthworm is an annelid because is is segmented along its body.

8) arachnid: An arachnid has simple eyes and four pairs of legs. This dead spider is an example of an arachnid because spiders' eyes are just black dots and don't have advanced parts of the eye like humans.

10) arthropod: An arthropod is an animal with an exoskeleton. This scorpion has an exoskeleton which acts as a shell, so it is an arthropod.

12) bilateral symmetry: Bilateral symmetry means that something looks the same on both sides. This leaf has that characteristic because both sides look the same.

13) bryophyte: A bryophyte is a plant that does not have vascular tissue to transport water in the plant. Moss is a bryophyte.

14) chordate: A chordate is an animal with a backbone or spine. This cat has a backbone, therefore it is a chordate.

20) fungi: Fungi are organisms that produce spores, including mushrooms. This mushroom is a fungus.

21) gastropod: A gastropod is a mollusk with a single, coiled shell and a head with stalked eyes.

23) gnathostome: A gnathostome is an animal with a jaw. This lizard has a jaw so it is a gnathostome.

24) gymnosperm cone: A gymnosperm is a plant that has seeds that are unprotected by fruits or ovaries and this is a cone from a pine tree, which is a gymnosperm.

25) gymnosperm leaf: These are pine needles from a gymnosperm. The pine tree is a gymnosperm because its seeds are unprotected by ovaries or fruits.

27) lichens: A lichen is a plant that consists of a fungus and grows like algae. These are lichens growing on a tree trunk.

28) modified leaf of a plant: A modified leaf is a leaf that changes to protect itself or survive in a certain environment. These leafs are small needles which protect the plant from animals that would eat it.

29) modified root of a plant: This tree has modified its root to survive underwater. It retrieves its nutrients from ground underneath water.

30) modified stem of a plant: This plant has modified branches, which are the stems, because they have grown around the gate.

37) radial symmetry: Radial symmetry is when something looks the same no matter which way it is turned. This starfish has radial symmetry.

38) seedless vascular plant: These types of plants don't produce seeds but they do have vascular tissue. Ferns are seedless vascular plants.

40) unicellular organism: This small pond has unicellular organisms in it. they are small organisms made of only one cell.
