Big Idea 2-22

22) Hypotonic- when one substance in a solution has a lower osmotic pressure than another. This image of a wilted rose represents a hypotonic situation. Normally plant cells are turgid, which means its cells are hypertonic and water is pressing on the cell wall. When a flower wilts, the plant cell has gone flaccid. It is hypotonic. This flower probably wilted because of some microorganism or a lack of nutrients, but it still shows what a plant looks like when its cells are hypotonic compared to its surroundings.
