Big Idea 2: #31

31. Phospholipid is a form of lipids used in most cells. A phospholipid bilayer is a semi-permiable membrane which has a phosphate head which is polar and hydrophylic. The two tails are fatty acid chains which are non-polar and hydrophobic. This causes the phospholipids to line up in a ring which have the heads facing both away and towards the innards of the cell. The tails are in the middle between the heads creating a small nonpolar space which allows lipids to pass into, but not water and other materials that are polar. This Matsuda is an example of an organism with a phospholipid bilayer.
