Big Idea 1-27

Lichens are composite organisms that result when algae or cyanobacteria live among the filaments of a fungus in mutual relationship. They are leafy in appearance and use photosynthesis to produce their food, but they are not plants. Lichens are also divided into groups based on texture. For example, a leprose lichen is beginning to appear on this bark.
