16) Fermentation- a form of anaerobic respiration. There are two types. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in animals and produces lactic acid. Alcohol fermentation occurs in microorganisms, bacteria, and yeast. Fermentation is a way for organisms to gain energy from sugars without the need for oxygen. The picture above is bread. Yeast, a single-celled fungus, is essential for the creation of bread. It is used to make bread rise when it undergoes alcohol fermentation. |
