Big Idea 1: Term 18

Distinguishing Characteristics Between Monocots
and Dicots: Monocots and dicots are two types of
angiosperms. Their differences include the following:
(1) one seed leaf per seed coat vs. two, (2) long, narrow
leaves vs. varying leaf structure, (3) unbranched vs.
branched stems, (4) flowers and seedpods coming in
3s vs. 4s and 5s, (5) seed germination resulting in one
leaf vs. two, and several others. In one photo, there is a
Sago palm (Cycas revoluta- monocot) and in the other,
there is a bare, deciduous Bradford pear (Pyrus calleryana-
dicot). (Note: For all distinguishing features, the first trait
characterizes monocots and the second dicots.)
