Big Idea 1

14. chordate: Chordates are defined as organisms that have a structure known as a notochord. A notochord is a rod that helps the organism with locomotion and supports the dorsal nerve cord. The dorsal nerve cord is a bundle of nerve fibers which runs down the back of the organism. It connects the brain with the muscles and organs. Chordates also form gill slits and a post-anal tail at some point in their lives. The giraffe is an example of a chordate.
