Big Idea 2: Enery 2

#24 Something that is hydrophobic is a substance that has a tendency to be repelled by water. In this picture, some olive oil was poured into a water filled shot glass. The two substances separated quickly because the oil has phospholipids, a hydrophobic molecule.

#25 An isotonic solution is a solution that has an equal concentration of a substance as another solution. Saline solution, or eye contact rinse, is an isotonic solution in relation to the body. Its equal concentration of salt to that of the body helps make it less irritating to the skin or eyes.

#28 Lactic acid is the product of lactic acid fermentation, a process that occurs anaerobic respiration in animals and some bacteria. Lactic acid occurs in muscles when they work so much, that they are temporarily out of oxygen. The above photo shows muscles at work.

#29 A long day plant is a plant that grows most during the time of year when the sun is pressent for longer periods of time. One example of such a plant are peas. The peas above are from last year's garden. They usually grow during the summer.

#32 A saturated fat is a fat with no double bonds between carbon atoms. A food that has saturated fats would be, for example, peanut butter.

#33 Stomata are small openings on the bottom of plant leaves that let out oxygen and water and let in carbon dioxide for the plant. In the picture above, the bottom of a baby palm leaf is shown.

#38 Xylem is a part of the transport tubing in plants that moves nutrients and water through the plant. In this orange tree trunk, there are many xylem that help feed the rest of the tree.
