Big Idea 3: Living Systems

#2 Ethylene is a hydrocarbon chemical with the formula C2H4. It is a plant hormone that, when used, makes its fruit ripen faster. Bananas, for example, are given supplements of this hormone in some big industries so that they can be sold earlier.

#3 Eukaryotes are organisms whose cell(s) contain a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles. This dart frog in the picture is an example of such an organism.

#7 Alleles are variations of specific genes. We can notice evidence of these alleles through people's phenotypes. One phenotype that has different alleles is hair type. In the photo, from left to right, there is shown to be 1) curly hair 2) straight hair 3) and wavy hair.

#8 A flock, herd, schooling, etc. are generic names for a group of a specific animal. In the photo above is a rafter of turkeys (aka a flock).

#9 Behavior of an animal includes all of the habits or mannerisms an animal has in certain situations. For example, the picture shows a dog sniffing and eating grass because it has a stomachache. It is responding to a situation in a specific way.

#14 Mitosis is the division of identical cells. In the above photo is a faded scar on the center of my foot. It has healed over the past couple months by skin cells dividing and recovering the cut, eventually healing the wound.

#16 A phenotype is a visible expression of a gene. Every day, we can see countless different phenotypes. The picture above shows two different human eye phenotypes (brown and hazel).

#17 Different plants have different seed dispersal methods (the way that plant gets its seeds moved into different areas. One method is via animal. Birds, for example, can eat the seeds of certain plants, and later pass them in a different area; thus, transporting the seed. Another way is a seed sticking onto the bird and having it fall off when it is elsewhere.
