R Strategist Species- R strategist species are species that produce mass of amounts of offspring in hope some will survive and pass on their genes. They survive the optimum amount of pigeons which is small due to competition. This is a picture of passenger pigeons who are a r strategist species.
Altruistic Behavior-A sacrifice that is better
for the carriers of similar genes. This is wild Alaskan salmon who die soon after laying their eggs to prevent competition of resources.
K Strategist Species- K produce few offspring and then take care of them. They also have parental bonds and other family like characteristics. K strategists survive in high population circumstances. Cats are an example of K strategist species.
Introduced Species- A species that
does not normally exist there but has been added into the environment. This is bermuda grass, often used for lawns, which is not a native to the Northern California region but instead was introduced.
Predation- A symbiotic
relationship in which there is a predator which preys on the victim or prey. These are crickets at a store which are used to feed snakes and birds. This is predation of the crickets by the birds and snakes.
Endosperm- Nutritive tissue around
embryo of flowering plants. This is jasmine rice which is the endosperm of the jasmine rice plant.
Biological Magnification-
Increasing concentration of toxic substances in each link in the food chain. This is tuna which has the increasing concentration of the toxic mercury due to the buildup from eating so many smaller fishes.
Niche- Specific area where an
organism inhabits. This is the Yolo County Causeway underneath where millions of bats reside during the day and fly out during the night.
Biome (Wetland)- A wetland is a land area that
is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally such that it takes on
the traits of a distinct ecosystem. The Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area is a recreated wetlands.
Biome (Chaparral)- A hot and dry
biome that is characterized by its grasses and plains. This is the area around Davis that is mostly dry grasses and plains now as shown in the picture.
