Big Idea 2.4 Autotroph

An autotroph is an organism that can build all its organic molecules from inorganic ones supplied to it.  In other words, it can survive without obtaining organic molecules from external sources, or without eating other creatures.  All it needs is some other source of just pure energy, like the sun.  This makes this hedge maple tree an autotroph, as it survives solely off of the sun and the nutrients in the soil around it.
