Big Idea 1

1. Acoelomate: An acoelomate is an organism that has no coelom, or body cavity. The earthworm in this photograph has no interior cavity that protects its internal organs.

6. AngiospermAn angiosperm is simply a flower from a flower-producing plant. The flower below is from a flower-producing plant.

7. Annelid: (eathworm) An annelid is simply a worm with body segments, such as an eathworm, which has a segmented body.

8. Arachnid: (Pholcidae) An arachnid is an eight-legged invertebrate animal, like the Pholcidae below.

10. Arthropod: (black garden ant) An arthropod is an invertebrate with a segmented body and jointed limbs, like the ant shown below.

12. Bilateral Symmetry: (sycamore leaf) Bilateral symmetry is symmetry when an object is divided down a central line, as with the sycamore leaf.

13. Bryophytes: (moss) Bryophytes, such as moss, are non-vascular plants, which means they have a simple structure with no zylem or phloem.

14. Chordate: (black skirt tetra) A chordate is an aquatic animal with a hollow dorsal nerve chord and a tail behind the anus. The black skirt tetra is an example of a chordate.

20. Fungi: (mushroom) Mushrooms are uekaryotic organisms that belong to the fungi family, and are thus examples of fungi.

21. Gastropod: (conch & abalone shells) A gastropod is a sea or land mollusk. Conches and abalone are both types of marine mollusks.

24. Gymnosperm cone: (pine cone) A gymnosperm cone is a cone from a seed-producing plant. the cone below is the seed carrier for the pine tree, and is therefore an example of a gymnosperm cone.

25. Gymnosperm Leaf: (pine needles) Pine needles are the leaves of gymnosperm. the modified leaves of a gymnosperm hold the gymnosperm cone, as shown in the picture below.

27. Lichen: (Bryophyta) The tree moss shown in the picture is an example of a fungus with a photosynthetic partner, which is a lichen.

28. Modiefied Leaf of Plant: (rose thorn) A rose thorn represents a modiefied plant leaf, having evolved from the spine of a leaf to a thorn for purposes of defense.

29. Modiefied Root of Plant: (grape tendril) A grape tendril is an example of a modified plant root, having adapted from its original root function to help with the plant structure, exposing more leaves to the sun for photosynthesis.

30. Modified Stem of Plant: (potato) A potato exemplifies a modified plant stem, since it changed from its original function as a stem (the eyes being auxiliary buds) to the function of a root, which protects the potato from the elements and from predators.

37. Radial Symmetry: (middle of orange) Radial symmetry is defined as all outer points being symmetrically aligned around the center point, such as the cavities of an orange around the orange's origin.

38. Seedless Vascular Plant: (fern) a seedless vascular plant, example being a fern, is a plant with vascular tissue that does not reproduce by seeds.
