51. Altruistic behavior- a member of a
group or community that sacrifices their personal health for the wellness of
the community. Zebras care for each other because they are part of a herd.
52. Biological magnification- the
process in which a substance is passed through the food chain and it's effect
is increased with each step in the chain. The first step
of biological magnification is where animals digest plants such as this vine.
53. Climax community- the final stage of
a community with animals and plants living in harmony that will continue to
exist unless there is a natural disaster or human interference. This community of spiders will keep living
until I decide to clean it out.
54. Commensalism- a relation between two
organisms where one benefits and the other isn't affected. The oxbird cleans the dirt off of the rhino
and it benefits the oxbird, but doesn’t affect the rhino.
55. Endosperm- the part of a seed that
is full of proteins and other nutrients for the plant embryo. A bulb is an
example of an endosperm.
56. Mutualism- a relationship where two
organisms rely on each other for nutrients and protection. Flies clean elephants,
which feeds the flies and helps prevent the elephants from diseases.
57. Niche- the place where an organism
lives, the role of an organism in a community. All polar bears live in the
Arctic, which is their niche.
58. Parasitism- a relationship between
two organisms where one benefits and the others is harmed. Pelicans eat fish, which feeds the pelicans and obviously kills the fish.
59. Succession- the replacement of the
dominant species of an area by another till the new species reaches climax. This
clover like plant has been taking over my front yard and will soon be the only
plant in my yard.
60. Predation- a relationship between
two organisms where one feeds on the other. This leopard is the top predator in
Northern Aisa.
