12. mimicry (Batesian): Batesian mimicry is a defensive adaptation that animals have developed in order to avoid predation. Batesian mimicry is when an animal that is unprotected (lacks any ability to defend itself from predation) adapts to mimic an animal that is protected. The gopher snake in the picture is not venomous but its coloration and behavior mimic that of a rattlesnake, which leads to other animals avoiding the gopher snake.
