Big Idea 2

23. hydrophilic: Hydrophilic describes polar substances that dissolve in water. Hydrophilic comes from the Greek words, Hydro and philia, which means water and liking, respectively. Polar substances have charges, so since water is slightly negative, polar substances can easily form hydrogen bonds with water. The salt in the picture is an ion, which has a charge. This means it can readily bond with water.
