Big Idea 3



 2. ethylene - Ethylene is a colorless, flammable gas that is often used to force the ripening of fruits and  for chemical industry. A cooking stove is an example of ethylene being used as a fuel source.




 3. eukaryote - A eukaryote is any organism whose cells contain a nucleus and organelles enclosed in a membrane; the plant cells of this winter berry shrub are an example of eukaryotes.




7. Evidence for different alleles for the same trait - The phenotype of an organism is based on what genes are passed down to it from its parents. Each trait in an organism is determined by different alleles; one example of differing alleles of the same trait is the color of these dogs' (chiweenies) fur.






8.  flock, herd, or schooling - A flock is a group of birds that show "flocking" behavior during flight or while foraging. The term herd is used to describe a group of mammals and the term schooling is used to a group of fish swimming in the same direction in a coordinated manner. The pigeons perched on the roof are an example of a flock because of their "flocking" behavior during flight.




10. genetically modified organism (GMO) - A genetically modified organism is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering. These campari tomatoes have been modified to be globe-shaped and show a resistance to the tobacco mosaic virus. These tomatoes also have a high sugar level but low acidity.




18. prokaryote - Prokaryotes are a group of organisms whose cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus; the organelles of prokaryotes are all located together in the same region enclosed by a cell membrane. This probiotic dairy drink contains five different live and active cultures: Lactobacillus casei, Bifidus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, STR. Thermophilus, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. These bacteria help to regulate the digestive system and strengthen the immune system.






 19. seed dispersal method - Seed dispersal is the moving of or transport of seeds away from the parent plant; the modes of seed dispersal include gravity, wind, ballistic transport, water, and transport by animals.
The mandarins on this tree are transported away from the tree and are dispersed, resulting in the possible growth of new mandarin trees.




 20. tropism - Tropism is a term used to describe the growth of a plant in response to an environmental stimulus; one characteristic of tropism is the bend or curve the plant has as a result of a stimulus, like this "money tree".
