Many defense mechanisms are used by the clam including deep burrowing, squirting the predator, and a sort of "self destruct" system.

A hermit crab would be part of the aquatic shoreline or aquatic tidal pool food chain. The hermit crab is a scavenger. It will often consume leftovers from another's meal. It will also eat injured small organisms. Clams are one thing for the hermit crab to eat. Often when a seagull has a meal on shellfish it will drop the shells in the sand or on the rocks. Hermit crabs will jump to the opportunity and do a clean up job.
