autotroph: Autotrophs are organisms that are able to create its own energy, by taking in simple inorganic compounds. The word autotroph comes from the Greek words "autos" and "trophe" which means "self" and "nourishing," respectively. All plants, including the oak tree in the photo, are considered autotrophs because they take in carbon dioxide to build their own natural carbon structure.
