Big Idea 3

1.

Diploid: A diploid organism has two sets of each chromosome, one from each parent. It is represented by 2n and is double the number of the haploid number. This skink is a diploid organism with a number of 28 chromosomes.

2.

Ethylene: Ethylene is a flammable gas is produced by some plants during germination and ripening of fruits. It can also be made due to environmental factors such as other chemicals. This cherry tomato will produce it as it becomes ripe because it is a fruit.

3.

Eukaryote: An eukaryote is an organism which stores its DNA in a nucleus, has a endoplasmic reticulum and membrane organelles, and is multicellular. Eukaryotes are all organisms except for eubacteria and archaebacteria. This kookaburra being animal is an eukaryotic organism.

4.

Double Fertilization: Double fertilization is the process by which two sperm of a pollen grain joins with the embryo of the plant. One sperm creates the zygote while the other forms a triploid nucleus with two nuclei from the embryo to form the endosperm. This blackberry bush being an angiosperm will use double fertilization to create its seeds.

5.

Gamete: A gamete is a haploid cell that has developed from a germ cell. When, united with another gamete cell from the opposite sex it forms a zygote which will develop into a mature organism. This gecko has gametes that it will use for sexual reproduction.

8.

Flock, herd, or shcooling: A flock is a group of animals that live, feed, and travel together. They stay together for protection from predators. These flamingos live and feed together making them a flock.

14.

Mitosis: Mitosis is a cell division in which the both daughter cells are exact copies of the parent nucleus.  This includes genetic makeup and number of chromosomes. To grow and repair themselves these turtles' cells will go through mitosis.

15.

Meiosis: Meiosis is a type of cell division in which two separate divisions turn one diploid cell into four unique haploid cells. The four new cells created are now gametes that are ready for to join with a gamete from the opposite sex to make a zygote. This pine tree will go through mitosis to form its gametes that will eventually become seeds.

16.

Phenotype: The phenotype of an individual is the result of its genotype and is the characteristic that is expressed by the individual. Environmental influences also have an effect on the individual's phenotype. This squirrel has a grey fur and that is the phenotype for that allele.

18.

Prokaryote: A prokaryote is an organism that has neither a nucleus, nor membrane bound organelles. The majority of prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that use binary fission to reproduce. This cheese was in part created by bacteria acidifying it by turning the milk into lactic acid which is a main part of the process.
