Big Idea 3

2. Ethylene: Ethylene is a hydrocarbon that acts as a natural hormone in plants. It helps the process of ripening, and it can be found in apples.

14. Mitosis: Mitosis is the process in which a cell replicates. All organisms, like this carnation for example, use some kind of mitosis to grow and repair.

18. Prokaryote: A prokaryote is an organism that lacks membrane bound organelles and has a nucleoid region that contains the DNA instead of a nucleus. Cheese is an example of a prokaryote because it is bacteria.

7. Evidence of different alleles: An allele is an alternate form of a trait, and the two different petal colors of these pansies demonstrate this.

16. Phenotype: A phenotype is an observable trait. The hair in the picture has very dark blonde phenotype expressed.

10. Genetically modified organism (GMO): A GMO is an organism whose genetic material has been altered. Corn has been genetically modified to have desirable traits.

5. Gamete: A gamete is a sex cell. This begonia's gametes are found in its center.

1. Diploid: A diploid cell contains two sets of 2n chromosomes. This mandarin contains diploid cells with full sets of chromosomes.

3. Eukaryote: A eukaryote is an organism whose cells contain a nucleus and membrane bound organelles. All plants and animals have eukaryotic cells, so this weed is a eukaryote.

20. Tropism: Tropism is the growth or movement of an organism towards an environmental stimuli. These vines are exhibiting tropism because they are growing along the fence to gain the maximum amount of sunlight.

Big Idea 2

1. Adhesion of water: Adhesion is water's ability to stick to other polar substances. The drop of water is stuck to the leaf through adhesion.

4. Autotroph: An autotroph is an organism that produces its own sugars by turning simple substances into complex compounds. The thyme plant is using photosynthesis to make its own chemical energy.

5. Calvin cycle: The calvin cycle is a process in photosynthesis that turns carbon dioxide and some other chemical compounds into glucose. The lemon tree uses photosynthesis to make its own chemical energy, so it uses the calvin cycle.

6. Carbohydrate: A carbohydrate is a macromolecule consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Starch is a polymer of carbohydrate, and starch can be found in flour.

8. Cellulose: Cellulose is an organic compound that makes up the cell wall of plants. The leaves of this orange tree contain cellulose in their cell walls.

10. Cohesion of water: Cohesion is water's ability to stick to itself through hydrogen bonds. The water in the bird bath is held together because of cohesion.

16. Fermentation: Fermentation is the metabolic process that turns sugars into acids, gases, or alcohols. Ethanol fermentation makes alcohol, which is a component in this wine.

23. Hydrophilic: A substance that is hydrophilic has an attraction to water. Salt is hydrophilic because it makes bonds with water molecules.

24. Hydrophobic: A substance that is hydrophobic is not attracted to water and does not form bonds with the water molecules. Olive oil is hydrophobic because it is isolated from the water through hydrophobic exclusion when it is placed in it.

29. Long-day plant: A long-day plant is one that flowers when the length of the day exceeds their photoperiod. A potato is a long-day plant.

30. Phloem: The phloem is the part of the plant that carries nutrients. In the trunk of this oak tree, the phloem is the innermost layer of bark.

32. Saturated fat: A saturated fat is made of triglycerides that contain saturated fatty acids. Butter contains a high amount of saturated fat.

33. Stomata: A stoma is a pore found on the epidermis of leaves that allows the transport of gases. They are usually found on the bottom of the leaves, like the ones on this bush.

37. Unsaturated fat: An unsaturated fat is made of triglycerides that contain one or more double bonds. An avocado contains many unsaturated fats.

38. Xylem: The xylem transports water and nutrients in vascular plants. This maple tree is a vascular plant so it has a xylem.

15. Enzyme: An enzyme is a molecule that speeds up chemical reactions. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain.

14. Entropy: Entropy is the total disorder in a system. The leaves show a decrease in entropy because they have been organized into a pile.

12. Ectothermy: Ectotherms, also called cold-blooded animals, are organisms in which internal heat sources do not control body temperature because it is controlled by environmental heat sources. This lizard is a cold-blooded animal, so it is an ectotherm.

13. Endothermy: Endotherms, also called warm-blooded animals, are organisms in which internal heat regulates body temperature. This mouse is a warm-blooded animal, so it is an endotherm.

19. Heterotroph: A heterotroph is an organism that cannot perform photosynthesis to obtain energy, so it has to eat other organisms to gain its energy. A bird is a heterotroph because it eats organic matter to get energy.

Big Idea 1

20. Fungi: A fungus is part of a group of eukaryotic organisms that consists of yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. The black mold is part of the fungi kingdom.

29. Modified root of a plant: A modified root of a plant is root that has adapted for use of a specific function. The carrot has an abnormally large taproot to store food.

22. Genetic variation: Genetic variation is brought about by a permanent change in the structure of a gene, and it is when traits of a population differ from each other. The fingerprint differs from individuals in a population because it is determined by different alleles that have mutated overtime to become different from their ancestors.

8. Arachnid: Arachnids are invertebrates with eight legs. The pholcidae, commonly referred to as a daddy long-legs, is an arachnid.

10. Arthropod: An arthropod is an invertebrate with an exoskeleton, a body part divided into segments, and legs that are not connected. The ant is an arthropod.

41. Vestigial structure: A vestigial structure is one that has lost its ancestral function and is no longer necessary. The plica semilunaris in the corner of the eye is the vestigial remnant of the nictitating membrane.

12. Bilateral symmetry: Bilateral symmetry is the balanced distribution of parts to create symmetry. The leaf shows bilateral symmetry because the left and right side are identical in shape.

27. Lichens: a lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner. The fungus on the tree represents a lichen because it covers the tree and the tree performs photosynthesis.

30. Modified stem of a plant: A modified stem of a plant is one that has evolved over time to perform a special function. The thorns on the rose stem have evolved to protect the plant.

6. Angiosperm: An angiosperm is a seed-producing plant. The cyclamen flower is an angiosperm because it produces its own seeds.

13. Byrophyte: A byrophyte is a nonvascular plant that do not produce flowers or seeds. The moss on the tree is a nonvascular plant, so it is a byrophyte.

4. Amniotic egg: An amniotic egg is one that contains a yolk, a protective shell, and is able to survive on land. The chicken egg is amniotic.

25. Gymnosperm leaf: A gymnosperm is a plant that produces unenclosed seeds. This is conifer, which is a common type of gymnosperm tree.

11. Artificial selection: Artificial selection is the process where humans breed plants and animals to obtain certain traits. My dog is a purebred labrador retriever.

38. Seedless vascular plant: A seedless vascular plant does not produce seeds and has a xylem for transporting water and minerals throughout the plant. The fern is an example of this type of plant.

26. Homologous structure: A homologous structure is one shared between two different species that performs the same function and has evolved from the same ancestral origin. The cat's legs and a person's arms are homologous to each other.

3. Adaptation of a plant: An adaption of a plant is an evolutionary change that allows the plant to survive. The needles on the cactus have evolved for protection.

39. Tetrapod: A tetrapod is a four-limbed vertebrate, and the class is composed of all amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The squirrel is a mammal, so it is a tetrapod.

14. Chordate: A chordate is a vertebrate in the phylum chordata. These fish are vertebrates belonging to the phylum, so they are chordates.

21. Gastropod: Gastropods are snails or slugs, so this snail is a gastropod.
