#60) Big Idea 4 Term 20: R-Stratagests

R-stratagests are organisms that usually live in an environment that is not close to carrying capacity so they have developed the ability to produce large amounts of offspring that take a small amount of time and energy to raise, but will probably have a small chance of survival. the plant above is called lamb's ear. It is considered a r-stratagest because it produces many tiny seeds that probably won't live until adulthood.
#59) Big Idea 4 Term 18: Population

Population is the amount of one type of organism that lives in a certain defined area. Above is the entire population of calla lilies in my back yard. For a population to count they must be one specific group of organisms that live in a specific area that can breed.
#58) Big Idea 4 Term 12: Mutualism

The lichen above is not actually one organism, but a whole bunch of organisms. there are tiny cyanobacteria that live in the folds of the fungus filaments. The fungus gets nutrients from the photosynthesis of the cyanobacteria, and the cyanobacteria get shelter in the fungus. A relationship like this, where two or more organisms benefit from each other, is called mutualism.

A K-stratagest is usually an organism that lives in an environment close to carrying capacity. And because of this lack of resources they have evolved to produce few offspring but also to invest a lot of time and energy into each one. This tropical palm tree is one because it puts a lot of nutrients and energy into a few large coconut seeds that will probably survive until adulthood.

The sprouts above are from a a plant known as ice plant. It is an introduced species to California, brought by Spanish settlers. It is highly invasive and can take over whole cliff sides along the coast of northern California. an introduced species is simply a species introduced to a new environment by some outside force.

The the object above next to lego Hans is a bean split in half. The small appendage near the bottom is the embryo and the area around it is the endosperm. The endosperm is the starchy part of the seed that is produced by flowering plants to provide nutrition the the embryo, other examples of it are coconut water and meat, and wheat that is ground into flower.

In the tree above, although it is hard to see, there is a bird nest. It is near the middle of the picture. The nest sitting in the elm tree is a great example of commensalism because the birds benefit from the tree because they are off the ground and away from predators, but the tree gains no advantage from the nest or the birds.

Biomes are geographically defined ares with earth that is similar in geography, weather, and plant life. The biome depicted above is a montane forest. They are usually found from northern California to the bottom of Alaska, in parts of Central America, and in some parts of Europe.

#50) Big Idea 3 Term 19: Seed Dispersal Method

Above next to lego Hans is a seed that is special designed to move far away from its parent. The Japanese maple it is on uses a seed depressed method to make the seed go far away. This seed is designed like a helicopter in that it will spin quickly and float very far away.

The gell-like stuff above is a en vitro solution that holds all the essential nutrients for life. The reason it is a murky brown is that many bacteria are thriving in it. They are all prokaryotic organisms in that they all are smaller than eukaryotes, they have cell walls built of peptidoglycan, they have no organelles, and they have no defined nucleus.

Plants all over the world may seem defenseless because they can't run away when they are being eaten, but that is not true. Certain plants have developed herbivory responses to being eaten, such as the foxglove seeds above. when this foxglove plant grown up, It may be nibbled on my a rabbit but it will poison the rabbit and the other rabbits will learn to not eat it in the future, which is a way it can protect itself.
#47) Big Idea 3 Term 10: Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)

The milk above came from a cow, and although this cow was not genetically modified, it was fed feed that is a GMO. The danger in feeding cattle GMOs like this is that the GMOs can harm the cattle's digestive system, cause cancer, and taint its milk or meat product.

Above is a yellow miniature rose. It got its color from a certain allele on one of its chromosomes. But on different types of the same species, different alleles can replace one certain allele. In this case there is an allele for yellow color, But there could also be alleles for different colors.

The plant above is a snowdrop and it, like all other fungi, plants, and animals, is a eukaryote. A eukaryotic cell is unique from the other type of cell (prokaryotic cell) in that it is larger, it has many organelles, and it has a designated nucleus.
#42) Big Idea 3 Term 2: Ethylene

Ethylene (C2H4) is one of the most simple hydrocarbons and is used widely in the chemistry industry. It is used as a combustible fuel and as a chemical used to ripen plants off of the plant. The banana depicted above was probably picked while green, refrigerated, and then ripened with ethylene to turn yellow.
