Big Idea 1

1. Adaptation of an animal- an alteration in the function of an organism or any of its parts that comes from natural selection and better suits the animal for surviving. The Side-Striped Palm Pit Viper is an example of animal adaptation because its green scales allow it to hide from predators while it hides in green vegetation.

2. Adaptation of a plant- an alteration in the function of an organism or any of its parts that comes from natural selection and better suits the plant for surviving. The palm tree is an example of adaptations because its leaves are extra wide and strong to absorb maximum sunlight and hold up in strong storms.

3. Amniotic egg- an egg from a group of animals called amniotes that have adapted to lay eggs on land. The Caribbean flamingo lays amniotic eggs just like all other birds, which have a shell and a series of membranes.

4. Angiosperm- a plant that has flowers and produces seeds enclosed in the female reproductive organ of the flower. This daisy is an example of an angiosperm because it has flowers.

5. Arthropod- an invertebrate animal with an exoskeleton, segmented body, and jointed appendages. The Giant Weevil is an example of an arthropod because of its hard shell, which is an exoskeleton, and its jointed legs.

6. Artificial selection- the process by which humans breed animals and plants for specific desired traits. My dog Luna, who is a golden lab, an example of artificial selection because labs are breed by humans for their gentleness and the fact that they don’t require grooming.

7. Arachnid- invertebrate animals that have eight, jointed legs.  This Mexican Fireleg Tarantula is an example of an arachnid because its an invertebrate and it has eight legs.

8. Cnidarian- animals found in aquatic or marine environment with cnidocytes (an explosive cell containing one giant secretory organelle). These jellyfish are cnidarians because they live in the ocean and are invertebrates.

9. Coelomate- the cavity in the body of all animals higher than the coelenterates. This lion is a way to show its body cavity that consists of an epidermis, gut cavity, and lined body cavity.

10. Deuterosome- the blasopore( the opening to the stomach) becomes an anus. This dromedary camel is an example of a deutrosome because in the womb the anus formed before the mouth.

11. Eubacteria- bacteria with cells with rigid cell walls and flagella.  This picture of dog poop is an example of a eubacteria because this is where E. Coli is found in the lower intestines of warm blooded animals.

12. Fungi- a eukaryotic organismic that lives by decomposing or absorbing organic matter.  These mushrooms are decomposers or fungi because they live by feeding off dead organisms.

13. Gastropod- a mollusk with a single coiled shell or no shell at all, and a muscular foot, and eyes or feelers on a head. This banana slug is a gastropod of its muscular foot and eyes that protrude from the head.
14. Gymnosperm leaf- a plant that doesn't enclose its seeds in the plants female reproductive organs. This pinecone is an example of a gymnosperm because its seeds are exposed instead of being enclosed in the ovaries.
15. Lichens- a fungus that when found with algae creates branchlike growths. This picture shows some algae which is what lichens grow with.

16. Modified stem of a plant- a specialized stem that performs functions that are non-stem like. This picture of bamboo is a specialized plant stem because bamboo regenerates remarkably fast and the stem is hollow internally.

17. Protostome- animals with bilateral symmetry and a mouth that develops from the early stages of development. These dung beetles have bilateral symmetry and a mouth that developed early in its life just like all other insects.

18. Pseudocoelomate- a false body cavity where the organs are held loosely in place. This human is a Pseudocoelomate because I have a body cavity inside that doesn’t have a mesodermal lining and my organs aren’t held firmly in place.

19. Tetrapod- the first four legged vertebrates, includes living and instinct organisms. This Jonson’s crocodile is a tetrapod because it has four legs and is a vertebrate that is more advanced than fish.

20. Unicellular organism- an organism that consists of only a single cell. This blueberry represents a single cell because it is one berry out of a plant that has thousands.
