Big Idea 3-1

1) Diploid- containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. This is an image of a veiled chameleon. It is hard to see because it blends in with the plants at the top really well. Veiled chameleons, some other reptiles and amphibians, mammals, and some invertebrates and plants are diploid organisms. They reproduces sexually, too.

Big Idea 4-14

14) Parasitism- a relationship between to species where one benefits while the host undergoes harm. Cats, along with almost every other animal, can be infected by parasites. Cats often have worms like roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms that live in their bodies, take their nutrients, and cause vomiting and other gross effects. I'm not sure if this cat has a parasite, but cats can have parasites.

Big Idea 2-22

22) Hypotonic- when one substance in a solution has a lower osmotic pressure than another. This image of a wilted rose represents a hypotonic situation. Normally plant cells are turgid, which means its cells are hypertonic and water is pressing on the cell wall. When a flower wilts, the plant cell has gone flaccid. It is hypotonic. This flower probably wilted because of some microorganism or a lack of nutrients, but it still shows what a plant looks like when its cells are hypotonic compared to its surroundings.

Big Idea 2-16

16) Fermentation- a form of anaerobic respiration. There are two types. Lactic acid fermentation occurs in animals and produces lactic acid. Alcohol fermentation occurs in microorganisms, bacteria, and yeast. Fermentation is a way for organisms to gain energy from sugars without the need for oxygen. The picture above is bread. Yeast, a single-celled fungus, is essential for the creation of bread. It is used to make bread rise when it undergoes alcohol fermentation.

Big Idea 1-35

35) Protostome- a group of invertabrate animals whose mouth develops at the blastopore before the anus.  Arthropoda, mollusks, and annelid worms are part of the protostome group. The picture above is of fancy hermit crabs. Crabs are a type of arthropod, therefore hermit crabs are protostomes.
