big idea 2

38- A xylem transports water and nutrients up through the roots to deliver it to the plant. The xylem uses the properties of water adhesion and cohesion to do these tasks. The xylem runs through the whole length of the bamboo so the whole plant can get water and other nutrients.
36- transpiration is the process of water movement through a plant and it evaporation from it leaves. The evergreen bush use the properties of water to help force water up the xylem. once the water is no longer needed it released out the stomata by the force of evaporation bringing it up.
35- Territorial behavior is the way an animal marks or keeps his area. The crocodile maintains his space by being aggressive to all the animals that protrude into his space.  He will use his jaws and any other part of his body to protect it from an unwelcome invader.
33- The stomata are tiny holes in the leaf that allow the passage of gasses. The creeping fig leaf allows co2 to come into the plant while it allows oxygen to leave.  This is important because plants need to release oxygen as a waste product and it needs carbon dioxide for carbon fixation.
30- A phloem transports sugars throughout the plant once they are made through photosynthesis.  The ornamental grass’s phloem transports the sugars it has made.
29- A long-day plant flowers only after it has been exposed to sunlight after a long period of time. Lettuce can only flower during the long days of summer because it has to reach a critical length of time.

27- The krebs cylcleis the cycle that turns pryuvates into one gtp, three nadh , one h2o and four co2. The ant eater use energy he got from the ants and other insects he digested to turn them into energy. The process of the krebs cycle completely takes place in the mitochondria.
22- When a substance is hypotonic it means another substance has less of a component in it. The wilted plant is hypotonic because it needs more water. The cells have become plasmalyzed and shrank. To bring back the perennial flower we just need to water it
28- Lactic acid occurs when there is too much sugar after glycolysis and it needs to be broken down. This type of fermentation only occurs in animals. The Sumatran tiger goes under lactic acid fermentation when it has too much sugar.
19- A heterotroph is an organism that can’t produce its own energy by itself. The organism must find a way to get energy from another organism. The red panda cannot make his own food so he turns to eat bamboo and other organisms.
18- Glycolysis is part of the metabolic pathway that converts glucose into energy for the body. Glycolysis yields a net total of two atp, two pyruvates, and two nadh. The zebra is eating hay which through the process of glycolysis is turning it into energy.

17- Glycogen is a poly saccharide form of glucose that animals use for storing energy. When an animal body has too much glucose they convert it to glycogen for use later. The white- faced Saki eats plants and when it has too much
glucose from it the glucose turns it into glycogen.
16- Fermentation is the process of sugars turning into carbon without the presence of air. This process occurs in yeast and yeast is very essential in baking. Bread is made by yeast fermenting and creating air bubbles giving the bread the nice texture.
15- An enzyme helps catalyze reactions which is important in an organism because it doesn't take as much energy for something to occur. Grass contains the worlds most valuable enzyme rubisco. Rubsico is responsible for the carbon fixation of plants.
11- When a protein or nucleic acids lose their shape they also lose their function. There are 3 ways to denature a protein by heat, ph. level, or salt levels. When a beam of sunlight hits an object the particles release there energy in the form of heat causing the protein to potentially denature.

8-cellulose is a long chain of liked carbon that makes up a plants cell wall. Humans can’t digest cellulose but animals like cows and termites can. The Douglas Fir cell walls are made of cellulose which it keeps its shape
5- The Calvin cycle is a part of the way plants turn sun light into sugars for use of the plant. The Calvin cycle takes place in two parts the mesophyll and the bundle sheath.  The most important enzyme in the world rubisco is used to turn carbon dioxide gas into a solid. The Douglas Fir is a c3 plant did this while it was still alive.
4-an organism that makes its own food using inorganic compounds. This non fruiting grape vine produces its own energy by photosynthesis. The vine uses light from the sun the sun and gets nutrients and water through the roots.
1-Water is a special substance because it can stick to itself because it is polar. Animals use this to their advantage when they climb objects. The poisonous dart frog uses the vander wals attraction to be able to climb the vertical glass wall.
