Big Idea 1

)Adaptation of an animal: Adaptation of an animal is when an animal changes a characteristic of itself due to natural selection or the environment in order to survive or thrive.  Zebras have adapted over time to  have more distinct stripes which help them to blend in with their environment so predator that see in black and white cannot see them as well.

)Adaptation of a plant: The adaptation of a plant is the changing of a specific part of itself due to the community.  Potatoes have adapted to the environment because it has a growing amount of CO2 and the potato was threatened by it, but the potato changed the amount in which the stomata are open to compensate.

)Amniotic Egg: An amniotic egg is an egg that is laid on land.  The egg has a hard outer shell and all the contents inside for the organism to survive.  This chicken egg was laid on land and has nutrients and a hard outer shell, so it is and amniotic egg.

)Angiosperm: An Angiosperm is a flowering plant that produces seeds in the female reproductive organs of a plant called the carpel.  A rose is an example of a Angiosperm because it has a specific time it flowers and contains seeds in a carpel.

)Annelid: An annelid is a segmented worm that is bilaterally symmetrical  and usually exist in wet or moist environments.  This worm is an example of a Annelid because it is bilaterally symmetrical and has multiple segments.

)Arachnid: An arachnid is an invertebrate with eight legs and two regions of the body called the abdomen and the cephalothorax.  The picture is of a spider with only six legs because the other two have not fully grown in because of its size.

)Artificial Selection:  Artificial selection is when humans breed organisms in order to show specific traits or qualities of the parents.  This parakeet was artificially breed by the the owners of two half yellow parakeet's to show the full yellow feather color.

)Bilateral Symmetry: Bilateral Symmetry is when an organism present in nature has a specific line in which both sides opposite of the line are the same.  This leaf has bilateral symmetry because it can be folded in half and look almost the exact same.

)Bryophytes: A bryophyte is a small flowerless plant that does not have any vascular tissue but still may be able to transport water by specialized tissue.  There are three sub-categories of byrophytes which are liverwort, mosses and hornworts, so the moss on the top of this branch is a bryophyte.

)Deuterostome: A Deuterostome is a group of animals that the first two openings in embryonic development  are the anus and mouth at opposite ends, and the animal has a full digestive tract and a vertebrae.  A chordate is a class of deuterostomes and this antelope is a chordate.

)Fungi: a fungus is a unicellular of multicellular organism that decomposes and feeds off of other living things.  Fungi are also  different fro plants because their cell walls are made of chitin while plants are made of cellulose.  Mushrooms are a sub-category of fungus.

)Gastropod: A gastropod is a is a mollusk that has either a coiled shell or none at all, a ventral muscular foot, and feelers located on the head.  This snail is a class of mollusk, therefore it is a Gastropod.

)Genetic Variation: Genetic Variation is the differences in genotype of two animals of the same species that shows a  different phenotype.  The cause for Genetic Variation are the laws of dependent and independent variation.  These two deer came from the same population but they do not have the same antlers due to Genetic Variation.

)Gymnosperm cone: A gymnosperm cone is a part of a plant that contains its seeds.  This cone is not enclosed in an ovary like an angiosperm.  The picture of this pine cone shows the way that pine trees reproduce by using gymnosperm cones.

)Gymnosperm Leaf: A gymnosperm leaf is the part of a Gymnosperm that later turns into the cone for reproduction and normally has unenclosed ovules.  This pine tree has many areas that will produce the unenclosed ovules and later turn into the cone.

)Lichens: A lichen is an organism that grows on top of plants of rocks and forms a symbiotic relationship with it.  It usually forms a crust or leaf like structure.  This is a lichen because it is growing on top of a plant and has a crust-like structure.

)Modified root of a plant: A modified root of a plant is when a plant may need more nutrients or less toxins from the ground, so it changes in order to get what is needs.  This carrot is a root that have been modified because they needed to store the sugar.

)Seedless Vascular Plant: A seedless vascular plant is a plant that has no seeds and a central vascular system to transport water and other nutrients through the plant.  A fern is a seedless vascular plant because it has no seeds and has a xylem and phloem.

)Tetrapod: A tetrapod is any animal that has four limbs or had four limbs at one point in its history.  All mammals are tetrapods and therefore this lion is a tetrapod.

)Vestigial Structure: A vestigial structure is a part of the body of an organism that, earlier in its ancestry, was being used but now is useless.  The unattached earlobe was supposed able to move and direct sound waves into ones ear but now is useless because we can not move it.
